14 February 19: Four of Swords & King of Coins & Seven of Swords

Nobody ever called Pablo Picasso an Asshole* is a lyric from a song back in the day by a band called Jonathan Richmond & the Modern Lovers (great name for Valentine’s Day), and when I came across this little gem (KEEN articles) I thought some of you people whose mail and  messages sometimes pile up may appreciate this :

It is said that Pablo Picasso painted his masterpiece Les Demoiselles D’Avignon with the Four of Swords affixed to his studio door.

..and he didn’t even HAVE a phone! So the 4 of Swords (Libra/Gemini/Aquarius) today in past position is like the little card hanging on the hotel doorknob you flip over when you don’t want to be disturbed before they disturb you anyway. There may have been a period of extended rest and stillness that has been valuable and restorative.

What is the purpose of retreat, rehabilitation, rest, reflection, recovery, all meanings of the 4 of Swords. Swords are mental, 4 is stability. Peace, although this card is often referred to as a card of ‘truce’, that is, a temporary peace, not a permanent one.

If it’s grounding, healing, health and balance, we couldn’t have a better card in the present position in the solid, steady  King of Earth (Taurus/Virgo/Capricorn). Secure, confident,  rooted to his favorite spot in his lush, abundant vineyard, vines and purple clusters of grapes hang all over him.  If this isn’t you, this is someone who is a good person to have in control of things. Honest as the day is long, reliable, successful, he’s the ‘common sense’ King. He’s slow as gravity, being of the Earth, and doesn’t make quick decisions or ‘quick’ anything at all. This not only works for him but has worked for him (or her) so well, he’s the King. When he was but a Knight, his shield was engraved with the image of a tortoise (Scapini deck).

Thinks of Coins (earth)  and Swords (air) as tortoises and hares.

The Thief seems to not want to go away until we get the message, and in the future position once again, the 7 of Swords shows us someone stealing away from the crowd with whatever he can get – and once again in the future position he faces backwards, not forwards.  This though, I get as a very positive outcome: this needs to be a regular thing, this ‘stealing away’. The thief on the card does not steal all of the swords, but leaves 2, taking 5. As in:

‘Just give me 5 minutes.

The ‘takeaway’ from this reflective and restorative period of retreat was that this needs to be a regular thing – a permanent lifestyle change.  This can be seen as a selfish card, but look at that homebound King of Coins. This is a card of a successful home business, and you could be ‘gathering information’ as the sneaky swords like to do, taking ideas that work for you and leaving the rest. You may be researching ideas as to how to expand or franchise, having realized and accepted that you function better in your own environment and that’s where you do your best work, so let them call you selfish, stubborn, secretive, anything they want, but now you know what you need – and don’t need – to do your best and it’s serving you well. So put your mask on first and ‘steal’ some ‘you’ time. The ‘ratio’ of home time to social time may be the change to make, or lying low both on social media and In Real Life, consciously limiting your online time to a couple of hours a day and spending more time in nature or working with your hands. Does a mind and body good. In any case, when you feel that anxiety (the 7 is an anxious card) you know what to do. Get back to that happy place and re-charge.

Of course, this is the card of the thief, but it looks like whoever is in charge of the money is well in control, and if it’s you, you’re doing a great job.

Nobody steals from Picasso.

12 February 19: Ace of Coins & 10 of Cups & Seven of Swords

Stealing. Or, give me some of whatever he or she is having. When I drew these cards early this morning before the death of the latest IPHONE (6) and subsequent upgrade (10, I went on strike when they discontinued the headphone jack) which has been serving as my personal hotspot because the wind f**** my satellite dish once again a thought came to mind that has been occurring the last few days and that is that the past seems to be speeding up and the future seems to be slowing down. I’m not quite sure what that even means, but I like it. Must be an astrological thing.

Today in the past is the glorious Ace of Coins. It’s sort of amazing to see this card at all let alone how often it’s been showing up lately, so something big is happening, or more likely, in the past position, has happened. A major accomplishment or more like a new job, a birth, a windfall. An award of some kind. A reward of some kind. But here’s the deal about this Ace of Earth: it likes the ‘straight path’, as we see on the card, the blindingly bright gold gift is being presented to us by the Skyhand who is lowering the prize over a straight, narrow garden path. The straight and narrow, as it is said about this picture, meaning that this is was actually hard-earned and well deserved. Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn are all represented here, the salt-of-the-earth. The gift of  ‘talent’ is not wasted.

This has led to the present, the happily-ever-after 10 of Cups (Pisces/Cancer/Scorpio) and this is as good as it gets. We’ve done well in the past – this card sometimes gives me a ‘gold watch’ vibe, that is a parting gift of some kind or a retirement bonus, probably all going into your home and family, or a new home and marriage.

And here he (or she) comes, the sneak o’ the week, the 7 of Swords. In the future position,  the human with their head down hoping to not be noticed as he steals away with someone elses’ stuff is heading right for that happy couple and their happy home in the present position. This is straight up Watch. Your. Stuff. The Swords are of the mind, our ideas and as we know about this card, intellectual property. This could be someone with some bad ideas and possibly an offer of some kind, but if 2 cards were never meant for each other it’s the honest, straight up and solid Ace of Coins and the sharp but shady 7 of Swords. I don’t like.

This card in this position is always a warning to not get involved in anything even remotely dishonest. Plug your ears and go ‘nanananananaaaa’. This could even mean someone coming to you with stolen property, intellectual or not, and it’s not a welcome vibe. This could be home theft, and you need to watch who comes in and out of your house if you’re having any work done.

However, this card could also mean ‘stealing happiness’, or ‘stealing moments’ of quality time with a loved one or loved ones in the future, or being presented with some ‘secret plan’ that may be rather epic in scale, a dream come true almost. Or, somehow you’re being offered a life-changing position – an important one – that you or the family or the public didn’t even realize existed, was available or open to you. There will probably be some behind-the-scenes negotiations, but still – lawyer up.

He or she wants what you have, because to them, you seem to have it all, but you deserve it.

8 February 19: Seven of Swords & Five of Swords & Four of Wands

Protection. Someone has your back, for once. Something went down, and something is going down, but the good news is it’s the last battle.

In the past position and slinking off with what looks like his tail between his legs (it’s just his sash hanging down, but today it’s plainly his tail between his legs) is the Thief. Somebody’s been creepin’, sneakin’ and stealin’ in broad daylight. Not necessarily or only money, but any sort of intellectual property or your ideas  –  your livelihood.  This cowardly slime sneaks away with 5 swords, leaving 2 behind. On some versions of the card the thief is looking back as if he intends to come back for them later: on the Morgan-Greer card his head is down, he does not want to be seen. No one is even looking for or at him or her, and he does this on the regular.  They’ll be happy with the 2 that are left, he mutters to himself as makes off with his haul.

It’s like going out in the morning to get the eggs out from under the chicken and there’s an egg and you think, fine, and then find out someone’s been sneaking out and stealing 2 before you even get up, and it’s your own dog. With his tail between his legs.

This is notoriously the ‘Card of the Thief’ but also the ‘lone wolf’ card, a card of avoiding  or ‘shrinking away’ from confrontation. Of course, the actor’s part in the play depends on who the other players are, and now we have even more swords to deal with on the in -your – face 5 (Libra/Gemini/Aquarius). This  confrontation has not only happened but isn’t exactly over, although as we can see on the card, the sun is setting on the situation. This wasn’t and isn’t pretty. Everyone on the card looks blue and drained, 3 humans on their knees, their swords tossed down in defeat. However, I don’t get today that the hooded figure in the foreground is the bad guy, which is weird, but I get that he chased off the creep on the 7. Harsh, you bet. The next card is the ‘jail card’, the 8 of Swords, and the thief best not show his face around these parts again.

This is some behind-the-scenes hostage negotiations kind of shit. Both humans have hidden their faces. We don’t know what’s going on here, but as long as the Thief stays in the past – he literally looks like he’s just glad to get away with what he’s gotten away with at this point — all will be well. Very well. The hero of the 5, his dark hood covering the upper part of his face, gives me a Batman vibe. He is a professional, and seems to have the thief on the run: lawyer, accountant, hit man.

I could break my head over this but I don’t have to because no matter what’s gone down or going down, Batman has come to your defense and there couldn’t be a better future card, the ’11:11′ card, the joyous, celebratory 4 of Wands. 4 is a number of security, stability and protection, and today I get more of a warm homey vibe (the suit of Fire: Aries, Sagittarius, Leo) rather than a celebratory party vibe, which is also what this card is about. Weddings, showers, friends and family, homecomings. Usually we see a couple of humans dancing under party decorations, arms uplifted, shoes kicked off and letting the good times roll but on the Morgan-Greer card the flowers are fresh, the garden looks beautiful, and our happy place is waiting.

Worth the fight.

21 May 18: 7 of Swords & Knight of Clubs & 8 of Clubs

Secret travel plans. The fired-up Knight of the Wands suit (Leo/Sagittarius/Aries) likes to be always on the move – but he’s generally here and gone pretty quick. In traditional decks, he even looks like he’s having a hard time keeping his rearing horse from bolting out from under him.  He’s the star of this little show at the center of the other 2 cards. His back is to the sneaky, covert 7 of Swords/Air to the left, showing someone making off and away from a town in the background with an armful of swords – nobody’s watching. The card to the right of the Knight is another card of the suit of Fire, the 8 of Wands, showing 8 straight clubs flying through the air in formation. This card is sometimes referred to as ‘arrows of love’ and they do look like arrows descending to their ‘target’ from some distance. This card brings news, announcements, invitations, plane tickets..it’s all about making a move. Between the touch-and-go Knight of Wands and the frequent-flying 8 of Wands, there’s no doubt the time is now for this impatient Knight.

So it would seem that someone has been planning to make some kind of move from behind the scenes for a while. But this is also a card of avoidance and procrastination, no longer possible or desirable. This Knight has been, like his horse, straining at the reins, but either timing wasn’t right or he didn’t have everything he needed in place in order to make his plan work. He is now ready to put his ‘secret plans’ into action.

He’s probably ready to bolt and go his own damn way where he can move at his own (sometimes manic) pace. This fast-moving 8 is telling him to ‘strike while the iron is hot’.

But that 7 of Swords (Gemini/Libra/Aquarius) is the Card of the Thief, and this Knight’s back is to him, so I’m worried. Is someone stealing from him while he’s away or involved and distracted by something at a distance? This is embezzlement as well..we see that the thief is making off with only 5 of the 7 swords, leaving 2 stuck in the ground behind him as he runs off. That was nice of him. Will they even be missed? Is this a one-time thing or is this thief stealing little by little, coming back for the last of them later? Heads up, Sir Knight.

Is this Knight secretly paying somebody off for something, possibly at a distance? He can be a bit of a player..

If you’re traveling, watch your stuff. This thief also will steal your ideas, so be mindful.

It’s time to make your move, if you’ve been planning one. The Sun moving into Gemini out of Taurus in a way sort of feels like Mercury going direct after a retrograde…from Earth to Air.

Something that I notice when I consider this layout in a traditional deck as opposed to the Morgan-Greer: the Knight of Wands usually faces left rather than right and we see him only from the waist up, there is no horse in the picture at all, but his salamander logo is prominent on his yellow sleeve – he’s fireproof, as the salamander was thought to be, or certainly thinks he is. He certainly seems to be.

The thief of the 7 of Swords in traditional images is shown looking back over his shoulder as he steals away alone, in which case he would be face to face with the Knight in the center of the layout who may have just ‘landed’ or returned from a trip to find someone stealing from him, maybe even catching him in the act. This thief has looked back, it’s someone the Knight knows, and he’s not happy about it. How long has this been going on?

Time to make your move, or just make A move..maybe someone will surprise you with plane tickets and a Hawaiian vacation.

(That volcano’s been flowing since the 80’s. We used to watch the lava hit the water and cool and explode into new rocks, it was all very primordial and awesome. It really is something to see, and when we stood on the lava flow, it melted the bottom of our sneakers.)
